‘Ant-Man 3’: This Character Could Become the Next Superhero

For a while there, it looked like Ant-Man 3 might not happen. Now that we know that it is, fans, as they do, have lots of ideas for it. One of those is to give us the Ant-Daughter.

Specifically, fans would like to see a movie where Scott’s daughter Cassie, with whom he reunited in Avengers: Endgame, could follow in her father’s footsteps and become a superhero.

There is a precedent for that in the comics. And she’s not the only superhero relative who becomes super in her own right.

‘Ant-Man 3’ had been uncertain

For awhile there, it looked like Ant-Man 3 was a question mark at best. The first movie and Ant-Man and the Wasp both did better than many people expected them to, but they’re still on the lower end of Marvel’s box office ranking, with the first making $180 million  and the second making $216 million

Even so, that’s a pretty solid return for a quirky property that some didn’t think would work it all, and for a first movie that had a difficult production history,  with original director Edgar Wright leaving the project when it became clear he wouldn’t have free reign.

He was replaced by Peyton Reed (Bring It On), who also made the sequel.

With that kind of difficulty and solid but not spectacular box office, there was some speculation that Ant-Man 3 would go to Disney+, particularly because the property is kid-friendly.

Recently, however, Marvel decided to go ahead and make Ant-Man 3 for theaters after all, and now fans are calling for something cool to happen with Ant-Man’s kid.

Fans want to see Cassie become Stature

When we met Cassie in the first two Ant-Man movies, she’s a cute grade-schooler. She was essential to the plot of the first Ant-Man in particular, because what that movie was really about was Scott, an ex-con trying to win the love of his daughter. It made for much more personal stakes than the usual “trying to save the world,” stuff, and that’s one reason why the movie became a success.

When Scott came back from the quantum realm in Avengers: Endgame, having lost five years in real-time, he was overjoyed to find Cassie was not taken by the Thanos snap – and he was also a little disoriented because she had grown up. She wasn’t an adult yet, but going from 11 to 16 is a world of difference, especially when five years felt like only five hours to Scott.

Now fans would like to see Cassie play a larger role in Ant-Man 3, with Cassie joining in on the heroics. As Screen Rant points out, in the comics, she becomes Stature, a member of the Young Avengers, and that might fit in with Marvel’s plans because there has been speculation that Kevin Feige and company are building towards a Young Avengers movie. That would be one way to lay the groundwork.

Marvel has more than one family superhero

In the comics, Stature has basically the same powers as Ant-Man, only she does not necessarily grow and shrink at will as her father does. Instead, she grows when she gets angry and shrinks when she feels guilty. Later in life, she uses the name Stinger.

Marvel has a way of taking relatives of popular heroes and turning the relatives into heroes themselves. One of the most prominent examples is Shuri, Black Panther’s sister and the tech genius who supplies the vibranium-powered equipment.

But for a time in the comics, she becomes Black Panther herself. Letitia Wright, who plays Shuri, would relish that opportunity, although it remains to be seen if it would happen for Black Panther 2, due out in 2022.

“If the opportunity came about, then why not? It would be comic book accurate. Yeah, that would be amazing. It means more training, more learning and it would really be an amazing adventure. Shuri becomes a savage in the comic books. From going to comedic and fun and like a kid – to then just pulling out some claws. I’m excited,” she said.
