Activist Omoyele Sowore pointed out that there is no wrongdoing in #Endbadgovernance protesters displaying the Russian flag.
The Department of State Services (DSS) had disclosed the arrest of individuals associated with protesters carrying Russian flags in some Northern states.
Protesters were seen with Russian flags in Kano, calling for military intervention in the government, as seen in social media videos.
The Nigerian military labeled the protesters’ actions as treason, stating they will face prosecution.
The military vowed to take serious action against those inciting the protests.
Sowore responded on social media, comparing the flying of Russian flags by protesters to Christians displaying Israeli flags in churches, emphasizing that it is not a criminal act.
He criticized the government’s diversionary tactics and questioned the sincerity behind enforcing respect for the Nigerian flag.
Sowore added, “There is no crime flying Russian flags during protests, it is not TREASON. Christian leaders fly Israeli flags in churches, and lots of people fly Palestinian flags in solidarity with the Palestinians struggle.”
He accused the government of trying to deflect attention from the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement against the current administration.
Sowore further highlighted inconsistencies in the government’s actions, citing the deadly repression of #EndSARS protesters waving flags and singing the national anthem in 2020 by the Nigerian Army.
