Atiku Abubakar, who ran for president in 2023 with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed disapproval over the arrest and prosecution of activist Omoyele Sowore.
Sowore faced the police on Wednesday regarding multiple charges that included cybercrime allegations, such as calling the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, “illegal.”
Atiku labeled the prosecution of Sowore and the detention of Professor Usman Yusuf, a former chief of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), as “systematic harassment and intimidation.”
The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) apprehended Yusuf on January 28, 2025, concerning accusations of N4 billion fraud and other claims.
In his response via X, Atiku criticized the charges against Sowore as unfounded, warning that the current administration may escalate its campaign against critics.
The former Vice President remarked: “When I highlighted that Tinubu and the APC were focused on systematically attacking and dismantling the opposition to establish a one-party rule, I became a target myself.”
“The unfounded prosecution of @YeleSowore marks another episode in their relentless pursuit. Now, they have also included Professor Usman Yusuf— known for his criticisms of the administration— in their disturbing actions. At this rate, they might soon be dealing with the imprisonment of all who speak out against them,” he noted.
