Get ready to party on, dude. Bill & Ted Face the Music, the third film which is set to revive an old franchise, arrives this summer. Starring Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves as the titular characters, most fans can hardly wait to see them back in action. But one of the film’s writers and one of its stars are having fun with your expectations over on Twitter. Read on to learn more.

The late ’80s and early ’90s were marked by two ridiculous sci-fi comedies that paved the way for an odd, yet burgeoning subgenre. First was 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, in which two teenage slackers, go back in time in order to learn about history so that they won’t flunk out of high school.

After the first was a box-office success, a second film soon came along, 1991’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. In it, the two heroes are up against their greatest foes: Themselves and death. Will they make it back in time for Battle of the Bands so that they can secure the future of all mankind?

A third film is on its way

In recent years, reboots, remakes, and sequels to decades-old franchises have become the norm. And so for years, fans of the Bill & Ted films have begged and pleaded for a third movie. In March 2019, the stars themselves revealed that this was actually happening.

“We want to say thank you to you, the fans,” said Winter and Reeves in a video. “Because it looks like we might actually, hopefully, make a movie this summer: Bill & Ted 3 Face the Music. And it is all because of you guys, so we owe you a huge debt of gratitude. So we just want to say thank you. And be excellent.”

The first photo from ‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ is here

Bill & Ted Face the Music has been a long time coming. A script was first mentioned nearly a decade ago, and a director was attached a couple of years later. However, there were supposedly issues with getting financing in order to make the film they wanted to make.

Now, the time is nearly here. A first image has been released, showing the now-grown-up Bill and Ted with their respective daughters, Thea Preston (Samara Weaving) and Billie Logan (Brigette Lundy-Paine). (As you can see, they each named their daughter after the other.)

Writer Ed Solomon responds to a fan

When the photo was released, most fans were very excited. However, not everyone was into the idea. One Twitter user wrote with concern that the film wouldn’t be focused on the original characters, but instead on “their daughters going on a woke adventure.”

Solomon quickly jumped on this, joking that Reeves and Winter aren’t actually in the film at all — they’re “photoshopped” into the promotion. He went on to include language making fun of those who cite the “liberal agenda” of Hollywood, adding, “I like how the mere *presence* of women is a trigger warning.”

Winter chimes in

This would have been a funny bit on its own, but then Winter, who has segued into directing in recent years, decided to jump in. He added to the joke, and Solomon wrote back that he “appears only as a disembodied head in the upper right corner.” This continued for some time.

So for those who are worried that Bill & Ted 3 won’t be reminiscent of the old films, it seems pretty obvious that they’ll be maintaining the same level of hilarity this time around. As for what’s new and different? If you don’t like it, that’s OK. As the men themselves say, all that matters is that we “be excellent to each other.”
