A tragic boat accident on the Alogani River in the Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State has claimed the lives of four individuals, with two others currently missing. The boat, carrying 25 passengers, eight motorcycles, and four bags of melon, was en route to the Ashangwa community on market day when it capsized, leading to the death of four passengers. Among the 25 individuals on board, 19 were rescued, while efforts are ongoing to locate the two missing persons. The casualties include three males and one female.
Following the incident, Barrister Haruna Muhammed, the Overseer of Lafia East Development Area, expressed his condolences to the community and the affected families. An investigation is being carried out to determine the immediate cause of the tragedy. Divers have been deployed to find the missing traders and retrieve any lost goods and property.
In response to the accident, the Nasarawa State House of Assembly has introduced a bill for the establishment of an inland waterways regulatory agency in the state. Proposed by Larry Ven Bawa, the bill aims to oversee and regulate the transportation of individuals and commodities on all waterways within Nasarawa State.
