The Borno State Government has confirmed the detention of 6,900 individuals believed to be associated with the Boko Haram group and outlined plans for implementing transitional justice as part of their legal process.
During the event held in Maiduguri, Commissioner Zuwaira Gambo noted that a significant number of individuals, including approximately 200,000 Boko Haram members and their families, have surrendered to the state government since the commencement of the surrender initiative in 2021.
“As of now, around 200,000 individuals linked to Boko Haram have surrendered to the state authorities. Specifically, we have identified 6,900 verified Boko Haram combatants who will be subjected to transitional justice for their respective offenses. Our focus is on dealing with these cases as they are actual combatants,” she emphasized.
Transitional justice serves as a mechanism for promoting peace by addressing past atrocities and preventing further violent conflicts through various methods such as restitution, reconciliation, legal actions, and amnesty.
