Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has established a committee to manage the allocation of relief funds and supplies for those affected by recent catastrophic flooding in the region.

According to a statement released on Sunday by the Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijjani, this committee will include members from various important organizations, such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Department of State Services (DSS) to ensure a transparent process.

The leadership will be under Baba Gujubawu, with Professor Ibrahim Umara as his deputy.

Additionally, representatives from Civil Society Organizations, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Jama’atul Nasril Islam (JNI), Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and other relevant humanitarian agencies as well as the Shehu of Borno will be part of the committee.

In his remarks, Governor Zulum urged the committee to perform its responsibilities with high commitment and transparency, highlighting the significance of their efforts in aiding the disaster-impacted communities.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is also contributing to recovery initiatives, utilizing $3 million from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to assist flood victims nationwide.

Furthermore, the United States has amplified its humanitarian aid efforts for thousands displaced by the flooding in Maiduguri and surrounding areas.

This flooding event has impacted over 414,000 individuals and resulted in multiple fatalities, caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam following excessive rainfall.

Reportedly, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), this flooding represents the most severe the area has faced in three decades.
