BTS: The Meaning Behind RM and Younha’s ‘Winter Flower’ Is Deeply Emotional

BTS is standing firmly in a new era. After a whirlwind 2019 which involved a mini-break at the end of summer — our favorite K-Pop group has been hitting the ground running. RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, Jungkook, and V have been releasing new music non-stop — as features, solo artists, and as a group.

Recently, the seven-man group just announced the release of their forthcoming album — Map of the Soul: 7 and it’s clear that after nearly seven years in the game — BTS is about to take their iconic sounds and visuals to a new level.

Still, ahead of Map of the Soul: 7’s Feb. 21 release — BTS has no plans on starving the ARMY from new music. In fact — RM just dropped a new single, “Winter Flower” with Younha and it’s epically beautiful.

“Winter Flower” gives BTS fans a hint at their new era

Though “Winter Flower” is technically Korean singer Younha’s track — RM’s vocals and lyrics give the ARMY a hint at where BTS is headed in this new Map of Soul 7 era. Fans first got wind of the new track on Dec. 29 when Younha shared the tracklist for her album Unstable Mindset, on Instagram.

Fans were delighted to see “Winter Flower” featuring RM. It’s well-known that the BTS vocalist adores Younha, and often shares her music on Twitter. Obviously this collaboration was a long time in the making.

Inside the lyrics for “Winter Flower”

Now that the song has been released, fans have been deeply moved by the stunning vocals and emotional lyrics. Translated by Twitter user @doyou_bangtan, Younha opens the song crooning,

Under the deep footprints of the chilly winter wind, it blooms alone | As I wander, having found the reason I met you after my birth, the white sighs that disperse, pale, are frozen tears where may the end of this season be| If there’s an eternity hold on, hold on, hold on | I will take it away before you stumble | I will stay by your side until you survive | That you’d bloom

RM sings in the second verse,

Why is it, that I had met you -of all days, right here, right now, on this winter day | If I close my eyes, spring is far away, and it’s only full of cold breaths here, and yet in a harsh winter, from the blood you spilled | I was born, red Chinese plum, camellia, daffodil | Yeah, I’m fine with whatever you call me | They say life is full of paradox | All you gotta do is gettin’ used to this marathon | “Would the world be harsh only to you? It’s difficult for anyone” | To you, who has become an adult, these words cannot be ones of comfort | Listen well, winter: You’re the one that bloomed me | I’m now, with my limbs, going to produce a blue scent | I’ll let you know, that there’s another sky | With all my strength, I’ll call for it, the autumn that resembled you

The true meaning behind RM x Younha’s ‘Winter Flower’

Clearly “Winter Flower” is specifically for RM and Younha’s fans. It’s a stunning song about perseverance, being on your own timeline, not letting the world beat you down, and allowing yourself to bloom despite any obstacles.

RM even shouts out plants that only bloom in late winter into spring. Seriosuly this makes us even more excited.
