Brie Larson’s future in the MCU may be in jeopardy. The actress is currently gearing up to reprise her role as Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel 2, yet there is a small contingency of fans that are calling for her replacement. With Larson’s casting under fire, is Marvel caving to disgruntled viewers and planning on replacing the actress?
Fans are not happy about Larson
Captain Marvel proved to be a major success at the box office, netting Marvel over $1 billion in ticket sales. Larson went on to reprise the role in Avengers: Endgame and her character is fully expected to be a key player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward.
Despite this success, there are some fans who believe Marvel should have never cast Larson in the first place. In fact, when the studio first announced her involvement, fans actively tried to sabotage the premiere.
Those efforts, of course, failed to derail the project. Based on the movie’s success, it is safe to assume that most Marvel fans were happy with Larson’s performance.
More recently, however, online petitions have surfaced in a bid to convince Marvel to replace Larson altogether. One of these petitions has garnered close to 30,000 signatures and argues that Marvel should cast a “Woman of Color” to play Captain Marvel.
To be fair, Carol Danvers was not the original Captain Marvel. That title was held by a character named Monica Rambeau, who first appeared in 1982. Carol later took on the mantle of Captain Marvel, which is what the movies are based on.
What does Marvel think about the petitions?
It seems a bit of a stretch to think that Marvel would ever replace Larson based on the opinion of a small number of disgruntled fans. After all, the petition would have to get a lot more signatures than just 30,000. That said, stranger things have happened in the movie industry.
According to We Got This Covered, Marvel is well aware of the situation and is monitoring things closely. The studio is also reportedly looking to support Larson as she prepares for Captain Marvel 2.
Inside sources claim that Marvel president Kevin Feige is a huge fan of Larson, though others at the studio feel like she needs some help in the upcoming sequel.
It doesn’t sound like Marvel is seriously considering replacing Larson, but they might help her out by adding some more superheroes to the project.
Which character might appear in ‘Captain Marvel 2’?
Marvel has not revealed any details about Captain Marvel 2. With filming still a ways off, the storyline will likely change before development gets underway.
Sources close to the project, however, claim that Marvel is thinking about adapting a storyline from the comics called Secret Invasion. The story follows an invasion of Earth by the Skrulls, which would be a good way of building off what happened in the first film.
If that happens, there is a good chance that Carol will enlist some help to deal with the invasion. Nothing official has been confirmed, there are rumors that Nova might be introduced in the project.
Other names have also been thrown in the mix, including Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Jessica Jones, though it will probably be a long time before we hear anything official.
When will ‘Captain Marvel 2’ hit theaters?
Marvel has already announced the full slate of movies for Phase 4 of the MCU. Captain Marvel 2, unfortunately, was not among the projects slated for release over the next two years.
The studio has not announced when Captain Marvel 2 will hit theaters, though sources say that the movie could be out as early as 2022.
If that is true, then filming will likely get underway by the summer of 2021, depending on the exact premiere date. This would also put the sequel squarely in Phase 5 of the MCU.
The next film in Marvel’s lineup, Black Widow, is slated to premiere in theaters on May 1. That project will be followed by the release of The Eternals in November. Stay tuned for more on Captain Marvel 2 as we learn it.
