It all started with singer-songwriter Teyana Taylor posting a video of herself on Instagram covering Anita Baker’s “Caught Up in the Rapture” in 2013 — and it got real messy from there. Later that month, Rihanna shared an Instagram video of her hairstylist, Yusef, singing the same song while dressed like Taylor … and the “Gonna Love Me” singer didn’t take it well.
“Don’t play wit me Rihanna,” Taylor wrote in a now-deleted tweet (via Us Weekly). “F**k all this industry s**t, YOU & I know each other VERY well. Throwing subs 4 wat? U got my #, don’t show off.” Her Twitter mentions were then inundated with Rihanna fans, to which Taylor replied, “Y’all could bully everybody else & get away wit that s**t but that s**t ain’t one work ova here. so y’all could miss me with that NAVY s**t.” (Navy is the name of Rihanna’s fan base).
In another since-deleted tweet, Rihanna hit back with, “You will NOT get an @ from me! Not till you pay me!” alongside hashtags reading, “#nomorefreepromo” and “#irefuse.” Rihanna also changed her Twitter background, showing her then-net worth of $90 million compared to Taylor’s $500,000. Talk about next-level petty. Taylor responded by photoshopping her face on a boxer punching Rihanna. Yikes. In response, Rihanna tweeted, “I hate broke b**ches.” The beef ultimately hurt Taylor’s net worth, considering Adidas swiftly dropped their relationship following her threat of violence, according to BET.
