The absence of accountability rooted in the rule of law is fueling widespread corruption in Nigeria, as highlighted by former presidential aspirant Kingsley Moghalu.
Moghalu expressed concern over the deteriorating state of independent institutions in the country, noting the erosion of the judiciary’s integrity while criticizing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for focusing on minor offenders like yahoo boys.
In a social media post, Moghalu also criticized the police for prioritizing regime protection over investigating high-profile corrupt politicians and officials.
He emphasized the importance of ensuring that no one is above the law, citing examples of other countries where even top leaders faced legal consequences for corruption.
Moghalu called attention to the lack of political will in Nigeria to enforce accountability, pointing out the need for strong, independent institutions that have been significantly weakened in the country.
He highlighted the citizen’s role in demanding a cleaner governance system, acknowledging the challenges posed by poverty and illiteracy that could make individuals vulnerable to corruption.
Moghalu underscored the necessity for a comprehensive re-education of Nigerian society on ethics and values, proposing the inclusion of ethics in the educational curriculum as a fundamental step towards fostering a culture of integrity.
