Adebayo Shittu, who previously held the position of Minister of Communication, shared his concerns about the escalating poverty levels in Nigeria.
During his appearance on AIT, Shittu criticized how the nation’s economic crisis has turned many into seekers of financial assistance.
He recounted a troubling incident where a man from Bauchi reached out for N1,000 for food, and a woman called him 30 times in a single day asking for N3,000.
“Just yesterday, before I departed Ibadan, I received a call from someone in Bauchi pleading for N1,000, stating he hadn’t eaten in two days. Additionally, about a week ago, I was contacted by a woman who was in desperate need of N3,000; she called me repeatedly that day, even though I didn’t have it to give.” he remarked.
Shittu asserted that the pervasive poverty has been exploited politically, causing voters to focus more on immediate handouts rather than a politician’s qualifications or intended actions.
‘’It’s not my responsibility to alleviate the hardships of those seeking help. So when you approach such individuals for their votes or support, their interest lies solely in what they can gain from you in return.” he added.
He revealed that he currently lacks funds because he refrained from corrupt practices during his tenure. Shittu noted that life after holding a government position can be tough for those who were honest while in office.
