Nigerian Sprinter Opens Up About Mental Health Struggles
Ejowvokoghene Divine Oduduru, a Nigerian athlete known for his prowess in the 100-meter and 200-meter races, has bravely revealed his struggles with mental health, including four suicide attempts.
In a heartfelt message on his Facebook account, Oduduru, who has set impressive personal records of 9.86 seconds in the 100 meters and 19.73 seconds in the 200 meters (the latter being a record for Nigeria), shared his experiences.
Recently, in October 2023, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) imposed a six-year ban on him due to violations of anti-doping regulations.
The ban comprised a four-year penalty for possessing and attempting to use banned substances, along with an extra two years being added due to aggravating factors. Additionally, he was required to pay $3,000 to World Athletics for related expenses.
Oduduru expressed gratitude on social media for the support he has received from fans throughout his career, explaining that his silence was due to the impact on his mental well-being.
He assured followers that he aims to return and plans to provide interviews to share his perspective.
He stated: “I appreciate everyone, especially my amazing fans who have stood by me from the start.”
“Many have been eager to hear my side regarding recent events. I have remained silent to focus on my mental health.”
“I’ve faced thoughts of ending it all multiple times, shocked by the situations I’ve encountered after years of hard work.”
“I will be available for interviews soon and will also host a live session on Instagram to explain everything.”
