‘Doctor Strange 2’: Shuri Rumored To Make Her Debut as the Black Panther in ‘Multiverse of Madness’

Doctor Strange 2 is shaping up to be an important film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie is expected to explore the consequences of the events in Avengers: Endgame as Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange travels into the multiverse. While the film will likely set things up for Marvel’s next big ensemble, inside sources say that Shuri (Letitia Wright) will also be making her debut as the new Black Panther.

Shuri to take on Black Panther mantle

Shuri’s part in Black Panther was one of the best parts of the film. She subsequently went on to appear in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame and should play a big role in Black Panther 2.

With Shuri being so popular with fans, there has been a lot of talk about her becoming the next Black Panther. The most likely moment for this to happen would be in the Black Panther sequel, though sources claim that Marvel might introduce her in a Phase 4 movie.

The studio, of course, has not said anything about Shuri taking over, but Marvel is exploring another version of the character in What If…?. That storyline is rumored to have T’Challa become Star-Lord, though nothing official has been confirmed.

But if Marvel is planning on giving Shuri Black Panther’s mantle, then sources say her transformation will actually take place in Doctor Strange 2.

Will Shuri appear in ‘Doctor Strange 2’?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will explore the multiverse like never before. Marvel has openly discussed the idea of the multiverse in previous films, but we have yet to see a superhero actually explore it.

That is about to change in Doctor Strange 2 as the eponymous hero is set to embark on a journey in the multiverse. This will undoubtedly put Strange into contact with other versions of characters we have grown to love over the years, opening the door for a slew of cameos.

According to We Got This Covered, sources also claim that Marvel wants to introduce Shuri as Black Panther in the movie. But since the film will be set in the multiverse, Shuri’s Black Panther will simply be a female version of the character in a different universe.

It should be noted that Marvel has not confirmed any of these rumors, but it is exciting to think about the possibilities as we head into Phase 4 of the MCU.

What other characters will pop up in ‘Doctor Strange 2’?

To complicate things even more, the original director for Doctor Strange 2 is now out of the mix. Director Scott Derrickson walked away from the project over creative differences with Marvel. Derrickson was in the middle of developing the storyline for the project when he left.

Luckily, Marvel found the perfect replacement in Sam Raimi, who is most famous for directing The Evil Dead horror franchise and the Spider-Man movies featuring Tobey Maguire.

Michael Waldron, who is leading the new Loki series, is reportedly writing the new screenplay for the sequel. At this point, details about Doctor Strange 2 are very slim, though production is expected to ramp up this summer.

Marvel fans are excited about Raimi’s return to Marvel

Although Derrickson’s departure was worrisome, it is good to know that the Doctor Strange sequel is in Raimi’s competent hands. Not only does Raimi offer a new point of view to the project, but he has a lot of experience in the horror genre.

Marvel wants Doctor Strange 2 to be a mix between a horror movie and a superhero flick, and Raimi is probably one of the few directors in Hollywood who can pull something like that off.

He also has a history with the Spider-Man franchise and is rumored to be interested in bringing Maguire back into the mix. Raimi reportedly wants to have Maguire reprise his role as Peter Parker, only this time he’ll be playing the character from a different universe.

Whatever happens, we cannot wait to see what Raimi and his team come up with.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, is set to hit theaters on May 7, 2021.
