As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to grow in Phase 4 (and beyond), fans are eager to see which new characters will be introduced. One upcoming film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, especially has the potential to bring in some very unique comic-book figures. But we already know of one who won’t be appearing in the upcoming sequel.
Scott Derrickson directed ‘Doctor Strange’
Derrickson is best known to mainstream audiences for writing and directing Doctor Strange. However, he’s also popular for his contributions to the genre of horror. That’s right: Prior to making the MCU flick, the filmmaker was behind such movies as Hellraiser: Inferno, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and Sinister.
Doctor Strange was a big move for Derrickson, taking him into the world of superheroes, action-adventure, sci-fi, and big-budget filmmaking in general. But given how well the epic flick did for Marvel, and how integral the character now is to the MCU, it’s not surprising that he’s set to return.
He is returning to the MCU for the sequel
Yes, for those who aren’t aware, a sequel, titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has been announced. It has been rumored for some time, but became official at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019, along with several other Phase 4 projects.
Derrickson, who is once again back as writer and director, was at Comic-Con for the announcement with star Benedict Cumberbatch. While sharing the artwork for the upcoming movie on social media, he added the release month and year (May 2021) and the hashtag #ScaryMCU, alluding to both his reputation in the horror genre and possibly what’s to come for the character.
Derrickson confirms this character will not appear
We all know that there are plenty of rumors out there about what’s to come in the MCU. And of the upcoming projects, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may be one of the most mysterious (and with good reason). So when theories about characters pop up, no matter how ridiculous they are, fans take note.
One such theory that was circulating was that a very strange character known as Googam, a blob-like alien from the comics, would be appearing. It seemed clear to most that Derrickson was joking when he added “spoiler alert” to a tweet about this, but after being sent a Reddit screenshot, he clarified further.
What do we know about ‘Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness’?
So what exactly do we know about Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness anyway? Cumberbatch will star, as will Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. The tone appears as though it will be darker than ever before. And Derrickson shared the above pane from the comics as what we can only assume is a hint to the plot.
Though we’re unlikely to see a trailer anytime soon, there is one saving grace. WandaVision will be out on Disney+ later this year, and given that it also stars Olsen’s heroine, we have a feeling it might give us a bit of a hint about the Doctor Strange sequel. Here’s hoping!
