There are a lot of changes coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But we’re also hoping to see an old character, Mordo, crop up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. After all, he’s already been set up as a villain. So will he return? Here’s what we know.
Chiwetel Ejiofor is Mordo in ‘Doctor Strange’
As a refresher, here’s what happens in Doctor Strange. The titular character is sent by Jonathan Pangborn, a paraplegic who is able to walk thanks to the teachings of the Ancient One, to study under both her and Mordo, another Master of the Mystic Arts. Together, they teach Strange.
But there are differences of opinion among the sorcerers. Mordo follows rules strictly, while Strange needs to break them in order to defeat Dormammu. This compels him to leave Kamar-Taj and his chosen path.
The post-credits scene set him up as a villain

In the second end-credit scene, Mordo arrives at Pangborn’s workshop, saying that he’s “been away for many months.” He continues, explaining he believes that “the true purpose of a sorcerer is to twist things out of their proper shape. Stealing power, perverting nature.”
Pangborn argues with him, but then falls to the ground as Mordo takes his powers. Mordo says, “I see what’s wrong with the world: Too many sorcerers.” You can watch the scene in full above.
Mordo is a villain in the comics
As you can see, Mordo is clearly being set up to a villain for Doctor Strange. This is fitting, as he is an adversary of the hero in the comics. According to Den of Geek, he first appeared in Strange Tales #111, an early adventure of Doctor Strange’s.
Similar to the film, Mordo is someone with the same abilities as Strange, but he uses them for evil rather than good. He was trained by the Ancient One, but had a dark past, and turned against the powerful being. Mordo also received more power from Dormammu at one point.
Ejiofor is reportedly returning for the ‘Doctor Strange’ sequel
We’ve been waiting a long time to see the return on investment with Mordo. After Doctor Strange, there was very little word on a sequel for some time, as the character was integrated into the rest of the MCU with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. But now that the Infinity Saga is over, it’s time for a sequel.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019. The film is due out on May 7, 2021. And Ejiofor is expected to reprise his role as Mordo alongside Cumberbatch, Wong, and Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch.
Who else could play a villain in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’?
Speaking of Wanda Maximoff, there are rumors that she will become a villain in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. First, she’ll be seen in the upcoming Disney+ series, WandaVision. And though we don’t yet know how any of these characters will work together, if Doctor Strange is up against both Scarlet Witch and Mordo, he’s got a lot to take on in this new film.
