In response to the abduction of Dr. Stephen Ezeh, the Nigeria Medical Association in Anambra has instructed its members to cease all services in both public and private hospitals in the state.

Dr. Ezeh was kidnapped in Ihiala on August 15, 2024, and has remained captive ever since.

The association’s Chairman, Dr. Princeston Okam, and Secretary, Dr. Ifeanyi Obiaeli, announced this decision after an emergency general meeting on Thursday, August 22.

Earlier, on August 19, the doctors had warned of a potential shutdown if Ezeh was not released within 48 hours.

Expressing disappointment over Ezeh’s prolonged captivity despite the ultimatum and appeals to the state government, the association emphasized the need for his release due to his health conditions.

The association’s directive includes withdrawing clinical services from all types of hospitals until their member is freed.

Monitoring teams will ensure compliance, and any defaulting hospitals or doctors will face consequences as per the congress’s decisions.

The association urged the Anambra State government to utilize all resources for the prompt and unconditional release of Dr. Ezeh.

While acknowledging the potential challenges the strike may pose to the public, the association urged the government to work speedily in ensuring their colleague’s safe return.

The NMA pledged to collaborate with government agencies to ensure the well-being and security of the populace.

They lauded the efforts of the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and the Health Commissioner, Dr. Afam Obidike, in enhancing healthcare and security in Anambra.

The association also appreciated the dedication of doctors in providing quality healthcare to the people of Anambra.
