Dr. Haruna Mariga, the Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management agency, confirmed the tragic events, citing the impact of heavy rainfall at the onset of the 2024 rainy season.
Dr. Mariga stated that a total of 2,744 hectares of farmland were submerged in addition to the human losses and property damage.
The fatalities were attributed to incidents such as building collapses, drownings, and canoe accidents.
“The disaster resulted in 16 deaths, with 3,936 people displaced, while 2,744 hectares of farmland were submerged,” he emphasized, noting that the situation is expected to worsen due to ongoing heavy rainfall.
Efforts have been made to provide temporary shelters and distribute essential relief items to those affected to alleviate their hardships.
Rice, maize, maize grits, blankets, pasta, and mats are among the items that have been distributed to assist the displaced individuals.
