The Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended 34-year-old Jaafar Lawan, an ex-convict, on charges of armed robbery.
According to a statement made by the police spokesperson, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, on November 19, 2024, Jaafar had a prior conviction linked to an incident involving a 34-year-old motorcycle rider.
The police report states that Jaafar and Mustapha Adam attacked the rider with a spanner, leading to serious injuries and unconsciousness before stealing the motorcycle on July 27, 2024.
Further investigation uncovered that Jaafar was involved in a new crime on November 17.
He allegedly hypnotized another motorcycle rider using a white powder after pretending to be a passenger, then proceeded to steal the bike. The victim only regained consciousness three days later in a hospital.
“Previously, on July 27, 2023, the suspect was caught for conspiracy and armed robbery after he disguised himself as a passenger. He boarded the motorcycle driven by a 30-year-old from the Magaji Quarters at the central market, heading towards the old airport area,” the statement explained.
“At the Wikki Oil axis, Jaafar and Mustapha Adam assaulted the rider with a spanner, leading to severe injuries, and they were subsequently prosecuted.
“Following a complaint on November 17, detectives from Dutsen Tanshi Divisional Police quickly launched an investigation that uncovered Jaafar’s involvement in another crime.
“The victim stated that the suspect requested a ride to Gidan Kaji around 11:00 AM and then asked to stop. It was then that the victim lost consciousness, allegedly due to the powder used on him, and awoke three days later in a hospital.
“The investigation is ongoing, and charges will be filed against the suspect when it concludes.
“In light of these incidents, Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Musa Muhammad, has called for enhanced security measures throughout the state to ensure a safe holiday season for everyone.”
