From 9 to 5 to Jollof: Our Journey from Corporate Life to Culinary Passion in the UK

How We Quit Our Jobs To Sell Jollof Rice In (via Primetweets)

Azeez Olayide, a food entrepreneur from Nigeria, shared his journey of leaving traditional employment to pursue a business selling jollof rice in the UK.

This revelation came during an interview on the show My Tasty Naija.

Olayide mentioned that his venture, named ‘2 Nigerian Boys,’ was launched in February 2019 at the Spitalfield market in London’s Financial District.

The inspiration for the business arose when he and a friend sought a delicious “smoky” jollof rice but couldn’t find any.

“It’s a tale of two Nigerian friends passionate about their cuisine,” Olayide explained. “One suggested we head to the city to sell jollof rice.”

On their first day of trading, they were astonished to sell out in just 30 minutes, which boosted their confidence about the venture’s potential.

“We were both astonished, looking at each other, stating, ‘We should leave our jobs and focus on selling Nigerian food.’

He noted that customer response played a vital role in the business’s success, as many were enthusiastic about the flavors offered.

“Surprisingly, 90% of our customers are not of African descent, with only 10% being Nigerians who enjoy the beef options,” Olayide elaborated.

“Our peak hours are during lunchtime, operating from 12 PM to 2 PM, when things get bustling.”

A unique aspect of their service is that the food is prepared right on the spot, capturing the attention of those passing by.

Additionally, Olayide revealed that a new location has opened in Bristol following customer requests from London.

He chose not to name his business partner, describing him instead as “a magician” responsible for the jollof rice’s exceptional taste.

“While the magic happens behind the scenes, the second Nigerian boy is the mastermind who brings our venture to life,” he concluded.
