In an interview with the outlet, director-writer Jason Reitman has also revealed new details on the film’s plot and characters, confirming that Ghostbusters: Afterlife indeed “connects back to the Manhattan Crossrip of 1984,” that was seen in the first film.
“As the family arrives at an old farm, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters,” Reitman said. “Trevor and Phoebe are about to find out who their grandfather was and whether they’re ready to pick up the proton pack themselves.”
12-year-old Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel, Annabelle Comes Home) will star in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, with Carrie Coon (The Leftovers) playing her mother and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things, IT) as her older brother. Paul Rudd (Avengers: Endgame) will be playing a teacher in the film, while Oliver Cooper and Bokeem Woodbine will also be featured. Original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts are all expected to return for the sequel.

Jason Reitman (Juno, Young Adult, Tully) directed the new film, taking over from his father Ivan Reitman who helmed the first two and will produce. We also know that Reitman, who had a cameo in 1989’s Ghostbusters 2, co-wrote the script with Gil Kenan (Monster House, Poltergeist), who is no stranger to ghost stories.
The new Ghostbusters is slated to drop in theaters on July 10, 2020.
