‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Trailer: Is Finn Wolfhard [SPOILER]’s Son?

Jason Reitman nearly broke the internet when he announced he was making a new Ghostbusters movie that would be set in the universe of the original two films. Ever since, he’s revealed little pieces of information, including the young stars Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace, and the film’s formal title, Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The full trailer for the film reveals a lot of Easter Eggs but leaves many more to discover.

The legacy sequel centers on Trevor (Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Grace) who move to a small town with their single mother (Carrie Coon). A dig opens a ghost portal, and the kids discover some old Ghostbuster equipment to help them fight it. Paul Rudd also stars and the surviving cast of the original films are confirmed to appear. Ghostbusters: Afterlife opens July 10, 2020.

Is Finn Wolfhard this OG Ghostbuster’s Son?

During the trailer, Phoebe talks about how it’s only her mom. Her grandfather helped out before he passed away, but there’s no father in the picture. When she discovers the old Ghostbuster uniforms, she picks out Spengler’s uniform. Is she Egon’s daughter? That would make Trevor his son!

Egon Spengler was the character Harold Ramis portrayed in Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. Ramis died in 2014. The 2016 remake paid homage to Ramis with a bust of his head. The tragic loss of Ramis would explain why he could not be in the picture, literally.

When Rudd asks, “Your dad never mentioned this to you?” that suggests maybe he knows her father was one of them. Or, maybe Egon’s the grandfather. He could have had chlidren who had children of their own by now, and that would be something their father should have talked about. Finn Wolfhard dressed as a Ghostbuster on Stranger Things. Now he may be the son or grandson of one!

Of course, Slimer is back

Slimer has been enjoying retirement since the 1989 sequel. He must have asked for a lot of money to return for Ghostbusters: Afterlife

The trailer shows the kids chasing Slimer around town shooting proton beams at him. Slimer is as fast and slippery as ever, but the visual effect is true to the 1984 effect even though it’s probably all done in a computer now.

Ecto-1 had been modified since ‘Ghostbusters II’

Speaking of original elements, the kids find the Ecto-1, the station wagon the original Ghostbusters used to travel to haunting scenes and transport the captured ghost back to headquarters. It seems sometime between 1989 and 2020, Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) made some upgrades.

Phoebe discovers a “gunner seat” that ejects out the side of the cab so she can fire proton beams at Slimer while Trevor drives. Mind you, Trevor is too young to have a driver’s license, but it sure looks like fun.

Where are the original Ghostbusters?

Dan Aykroyd confirmed that Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and himself would return for the 2020 film. They will be playing their original characters, Peter Venkman, Winston Zedmore and Ray Stantz respectively.

When they appear, it’s sure to be a crowd-pleasing moment but Ghostbusters: Afterlife isn’t giving that away just yet. No new footage of Murray, Hudson or Aykroyd appears anywhere in the trailer. Only the archived 1984 news footage.

Where’s Dana?

In addition to the original Ghostbusters, Sigourney Weaver has confirmed to return as Dana Barrett, Venkman’s love interest. She is not in the trailer either. Did she and Venkman finally make it work after Ghostbusters II?

Also returning is Annie Potts as the sassy secretary Janine. Has she been answering calls this whole time? Well, they’ve got to save something for July 10.
