The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a caution regarding the dangers of skin-lightening creams that contain more than two percent hydroquinone, emphasizing the serious health hazards, including the risk of cancer.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Bauchi on Tuesday, July 2, 2025, Mr. Hamis Yahaya, the NAFDAC Coordinator for Bauchi State, remarked, “Using creams with hydroquinone levels exceeding two percent is dangerous. Mixing these creams without professional guidance is a mistake.”

Hydroquinone is a chemical often found in beauty products intended for addressing hyperpigmentation issues like melasma and age-related discoloration.

However, Yahaya pointed out that prolonged use can lead to severe health complications. “Hydroquinone can gradually impact users’ health, potentially leading to cancer,” he cautioned.

He also discussed the inherent advantages of melanin, noting,

Yahaya emphasized that NAFDAC consistently monitors products available in the market to ensure compliance with health standards, urging consumers to be vigilant with their cosmetic choices. He called on the media to play a role in raising awareness, stating, “Media outlets should highlight the dangers of cosmetics that could pose risks to consumer health.”

NAFDAC reiterated its dedication to protecting public health and encouraged Nigerians to steer clear of unregulated and potentially harmful skincare products.
