What supposedly went down between Camilla Parker Bowles and Meghan Markle centers on a photo shared to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Instagram on March 6, 2020. “Yesterday, The Duchess of Sussex, Royal patron of the National Theatre, visited the Immersive Storytelling Studio in London, where emerging technology like Virtual Reality is being used to develop new forms of emotive storytelling,” the account captioned black-and-white shots of Markle engaging with the exhibit, which featured a hologram of musician Nubiya Brandon.
Of course, it’s fair to wonder why the Duchess of Sussex’s post would irk Bowles when it’s seemingly so innocuous. The answer? The Duchess of Cornwall reportedly felt upstaged by Markle because the release of pictures coincided with a major speech she gave about domestic violence. Prince Charles’ wife had supposedly been planning her talk at the 10th anniversary of the Women of the World Festival in London for nearly a year, which made the so-called snub even worse. “It was known Harry and Meghan would be doing engagements this week, some privately, but everyone was in agreement that Camilla’s speech should take precedence,” a source told the Daily Mirror about Bowles’ “very upset” reaction. “Unfortunately some people had other ideas.”
It’s possible there isn’t any truth to this rumor, as well as the claim that Markle was advised to hold off on the photos beforehand. However, it’s fair to argue the Duchess of Sussex tends to steal the show, whether intentionally or not.
