The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, addressing journalists in Abuja, has asked groups planning to participate in a nationwide protest to provide their details to the Commissioners of Police in their respective states to ensure a peaceful protest.
He emphasized the constitutional right to peaceful assembly but stressed the importance of public safety and order by urging protest groups to give details like the protest routes, assembly points, expected duration, and contact information of leaders and organizers to the police.
Egbetokun highlighted the need for preventive measures against crime during the protest, calling for identifying potential troublemakers and ensuring the protest does not interfere with other events or activities by providing specific details to the police.
Guidelines set forth by Egbetokun include maintaining clear communication with protest leaders, minimizing the risk of violence or property damage, and cooperating with the police to ensure a safe exercise of their rights during the protest.
