Josh Boone reveals New Mutants trailer coming in January

While showing off a limited edition of Stephen King’s 2014 novel Revival on his Instagram, Josh Boone revealed in the comments that a new trailer for the long-delayed horror comic adaptation The New Mutants is coming to audiences next month, which could mean the film is still on track for its April theatrical release!

In addition to Boone’s confirmation of a January premiere for it, comic illustrator Bill Sienkiewicz revealed in an interview with Kevin Smith on his Fatman on Batman podcast that Boone sent him a new work-in-progress trailer, calling it “phenomenal,” saying it gave him chills and that “it feels more Marvel in terms of what they’re doing.”

Reshoots were originally ordered by Fox to try and expand on the positive feedback to the horror elements in the first trailer. They were slated to film again in September 2018 for an August 2, 2019 release date, but without the additional production scheduled the film’s release date had been left in limbo. Sources say that the decision to move forward with the reshoots lay in writer/director Josh Boone’s hands.

Some have been questioning whether the film will even receive a theatrical release. Given Disney’s acquisition of Fox, rumors are circulating that the film may hold its premiere on Disney+ or Hulu rather than a traditional theatrical release. This would align with Marvel’s growing relationship with Hulu after the streaming service ordered four original animated series from the company, as well as talks of them reviving all of the Marvel series Netflix has cancelled.

The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy (SplitThe Witch) as Magik and Maisie Williams (Game of Thronesgen:LOCK) as Wolfsbane, with Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Dani Moonstar, and Stranger ThingsCharlie Heaton as Cannonball.

The New Mutants adapts the monthly comic book series of the same name that launched in 1982. Created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, The New Mutants follows on a group of teenage mutants as heroes in training in the Marvel Universe. The feature is expected to be a departure from the sci-fi-action spectacle of other X-Men films and is instead being described as a “Stephen King meets John Hughes”-style horror movie.

In November 2017, ComingSoon.net exclusively revealed a leaked concept animatic from the film, which features Wolfsbane, Magic and Cannonball facing the Demon Bear.
