Kenneth Okonkwo Steps Down from Labour Party

Kenneth Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for the Labour Party’s presidential campaign, has formally resigned from the party. He announced this decision through his social media account, noting that his resignation will be effective on February 25, 2025, coinciding with the two-year anniversary of the 2023 presidential election.

In his statement, Okonkwo explained that the current state of the Labour Party prevents it from being a formidable force in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape. He criticized the party for failing to hold necessary local congresses, elect party officials, and convene a national meeting.

He accused the LP National Chairman, Julius Abure, of prioritizing personal gain over the party’s success, stating, “I sincerely appreciate the support from Nigerians during the last election, but the Labour Party is not structured in a way that allows it to impact Nigeria’s political future.”

Okonkwo emphasized that the leadership structure of the Labour Party is non-functional, as the party has not conducted elections at various administrative levels within the constitutional timelines. He pointed out that the tenure for leadership positions is three years, and with no congresses held, many positions have effectively expired.

Further, he noted that the past leadership, under Abure, has failed to legally establish themselves, which undermines the party’s legitimacy at the national level. He cited the Caretaker Committee led by Senator Nenadi Usman as the only viable chance for the party’s recovery, however, faltering legal battles have stymied its efforts.

Okonkwo stated, “It is clear that the current leadership does not have the party’s best interests at heart.” He lamented that Abure has not considered effective strategies necessary for the emergence of a strong candidate for the upcoming election, notably suggesting a shift in party leadership to better align with electoral expectations.

He expressed concern that some potential candidates from the South might be used for personal gain instead of building a viable campaign, warning them that aligning with the current leadership could jeopardize their political futures.

Reiterating his commitment to good governance, Okonkwo declared that remaining within the Labour Party would hinder his objectives for positive change. Thus, he chose to resign and dedicate himself to pursuing a future with like-minded individuals who are invested in Nigeria’s progress.

His resignation will take effect on February 25, 2025, allowing him to seek new political paths that align with his vision for the country.
