Labour Party Denies Automatic Tickets for Peter Obi and Alex Otti
The faction of the Labour Party (LP) led by Abure has announced that there will be no automatic nomination for Peter Obi as the presidential candidate for the upcoming 2027 elections.
Furthermore, the faction stated there will also be no automatic second-term ticket for Alex Otti, the current Governor of Abia State, within the party.
This information was shared during a press conference held by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Monday. The NEC confirmed that all nominations for future contests will be open to all interested candidates.
During the press event, Abure addressed a recent meeting led by Governor Otti, which resulted in the formation of a caretaker committee for the party. He emphasized that no governor has the authority to remove them from their positions.
Abure proclaimed, “No governor that we gave ticket can harass us out of office; no governor, no matter how highly placed, will come and with a fiat, dissolve the NWC, dissolve state councils, or dissolve LG councils; even a military government would not do that.”
He further asserted that the mandate provided to him and his team during the Labour Party convention on March 27, 2024, will be upheld and defended.
It’s noteworthy that in a stakeholders meeting in Umuahia, Abia State, held last Wednesday, Senator Esther Nenadi Usman was appointed as the Chairman of the newly formed Caretaker Committee.
Usman, who previously served as the Minister of Finance, was a representative for Kaduna South senatorial district from 2011 to 2015.
Additionally, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the Immediate-past Senate Minority Deputy Leader from Abia Central, has been designated as Secretary of the 29-member committee, which is tasked with completing its work within 90 days.
