Mark Ruffalo may not be done playing Bruce Banner aka Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) even though he’s suggested otherwise in the past.
It’s been almost a year since the Avengers movies culminated in Avengers: Endgame, the box office record-breaking giant that hit theaters on April 26, 2019. Ever since then MCU fans have been wondering what’s next for their favorite superheroes.
While some characters’ stories lived on and others ended — Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark aka Iron Man and Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers aka Captain America were two characters who said goodbye — Marvel Studios hasn’t made it clear whether or not fans will see more from Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner aka Hulk.
During an April 2020 interview with Variety about his latest project, I Know This Much Is True, a limited series from HBO set to premiere May 10, 2020, Ruffalo touched on his future as Hulk.
Mark Ruffalo says he’s been in talks to appear in ‘She-Hulk’
Ever since Marvel Studios announced the development of She-Hulk, a series for Disney+ about Banner’s cousin Jennifer Walters, a lawyer better known as She-Hulk, rumors have been swirling about whether or not Ruffalo will reprise his superhero role. After all, Hulk survived the events in Avengers: Endgame leading many to believe the character will be in upcoming Marvel crossovers.
Few details have been released about She-Hulk, namely the casting, but Ruffalo did say he hasn’t completely ruled out becoming Hulk and Bruce Banner once again.
In his interview with Variety, Ruffalo confirmed he’s been in talks with Marvel about the possibility of being in She-Hulk. But don’t get too excited. Ruffalo didn’t provide any additional details like whether or not he’d make a quick appearance as Hulk or sign on for a more substantial part.
She-Hulk is still in development so there will likely be more rumors to come about what the series will look like as the details are still being worked out behind the scenes. Aside from talks about She-Hulk, Ruffalo said no other projects are in the works. So, it looks like Marvel still doesn’t have a clear path forward for Hulk.
He’s not opposed to a stand-alone Hulk movie
While Marvel hasn’t figured out what Hulk’s future looks like, Ruffalo offered up his own idea about what’s next for the superhero. The actor who lives in upstate New York said he’s open to appearing in a stand-alone movie about Hulk. The last feature film to focus solely on Hulk happened more than a decade ago in 2008. Edward Norton played the superhero in The Incredible Hulk. Ruffalo would be willing to take a deeper look at the superhero’s personal life.
“There’s an idea that I think could be really interesting,” Ruffalo said. “We’ve never really followed him into his life. He’s always kind of off on the side. He’s like the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of the Avengers,” he added, referring to two characters in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. “It’d be interesting to fill in all the blanks about what happened to him in between all these movies.”
So, while we don’t know what exactly is in store for Hulk — at this point, it sounds like Marvel Studios and Ruffalo don’t either — we can’t rule out the possibility of one day getting a stand-alone feature film all about the superhero. For now, we’ll have to wait for Marvel Studios to release for details about She-Hulk and Ruffalo’s involvement.
