NAFDAC Discovers Counterfeit Goods in Aba Market

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) recently conducted a significant operation at the Eziukwu Market, also known as Cemetery Market, in Aba, Abia State, uncovering numerous counterfeit products.

This initiative followed a similar operation several months back, aimed at stores selling fake and adulterated items.

Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Southeast Zone Director, who oversaw the operation, reiterated the agency’s vow to hold offenders accountable for their actions.

Iluyomade voiced his concerns regarding market traders prioritizing profit over consumer safety.

He highlighted that an agreement made in December 2023 with market leaders to help identify those engaged in illegal activities has not been upheld.

The director warned that NAFDAC would reevaluate this agreement and ensure that market leaders face consequences for ongoing violations.

The operation revealed numerous low-quality products, including various beverages, wines, whiskey, yoghurts, carbonated drinks, dry gin, and snacks, all of which were produced under unsanitary conditions.

Some items were relabeled expired products disguised as safe for sale, misleading consumers both locally and beyond.

“We returned last year to find that the illicit activities have persisted. It’s shocking to witness the same troubling situation,” Iluyomade expressed.

“It’s heartbreaking to see people profit at the risk of others’ health. The scale of these operations remains alarming. We can make everything in Nigeria, yet people resort to selling dangerous products.

“I term these actions ‘mass destructives’ as they jeopardize many lives.”

He mentioned that comprehensive measures would be implemented to address the issue at Eziukwu Market effectively, as the agency maintains a strict stance against such illegal practices.

“We are already taking strategic actions to tackle these challenges decisively. We have received directives from the state government to put an end to these harmful activities once and for all,” he affirmed.

Iluyomade elaborated that NAFDAC’s presence in the market was timely, allowing them to monitor the situation closely.

“On Mondays, attendance is typically low due to the sit-at-home policy, making it easier for us to assess conditions without interference.”

He explained that if it were a usual busy day, it would be difficult to execute their mission, as disruptions from unlawful individuals could occur.

“We now possess specific intel on individuals involved, which will guide our follow-up actions moving forward,” he stated.

Iluyomade urged consumers to exercise caution while shopping during the festive season, emphasizing the importance of being vigilant with purchases.
