All the hubbub surrounding Disney’s acquisition of Fox and Marvel has left fans wondering about what’s going on with one of the comic book world’s most beloved properties: X-Men. It seems like all the other superheroes and villains in Marvel canon are receiving attention and release dates, but fans want the X-Men universe to grow too. Finally, there’s something on the docket for the mutant family.

‘Stranger Things’ actor spills X-Men movie details
Charlie Heaton stars in The New Mutants, a film about teen mutants who train under the watchful eye of Professor Xavier. The trailer for the movie came out two years ago because the film was originally slated to be released in April 2018, but it was pushed back. Diehard X-Men fans want to know what’s up with it.
According to ET Canada, during his appearance at the For Love of Sci Fi convention, Heaton answered a question about the film and its release date:
“…It’s coming out next year, but we filmed it almost two years ago. It’s the release that’s been moved quite a while.
If you don’t know, ‘The New Mutants’ is like an ‘X-Men’ spinoff. It was a comic book; [artist] Bill Sienkiewicz did it and it was an ‘X-Men’ comic. It’s basically like a separate bunch of mutants. We shot this a while back and it’s been pushed because Fox has now merged with Disney.”
The New Mutants is scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 3, 2020.
Who are the ‘New Mutants’ in comic lore?
These young superpowered kids were taken under Professor Xavier’s wing to learn how to harness their powers and work together as a team. According to the Marvel bio, their time at Professor X’s school for the gifted also included the chance to live as normal kids.
Cannonball (who will be played by Heaton), Sunspot, Karma, Moonstar, and Magik were among the first to be recruited by the X-Men leader. As a team, they’ve gone on missions together, expanded their forces, and have even lost a few along the way.
The New Mutants’ story arc has shifted through the years, sometimes breaking them up, aligning them with enemies, or bringing them back together—with new students/teammates on board.
In some stories, they’ve worked either side-by-side or under the tutelage of X-Men such as Wolverine or Cyclops. Domino and other young mutants who’ve met Deadpool have also been in their ranks.
‘The New Mutants’ will be a horror movie
While we’re used to seeing Marvel superhero films that lean more toward action and adventure, The New Mutants is being described as dark. Though the 2017 trailer gave full on horror vibes, director Josh Boone confirmed that an updated trailer will arrive in January, per ScreenRant. The first one can be seen below.

Cast along with Heaton are Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik. From the looks of the original trailer, the movie may serve as an origin story.
What might hinder the release of The New Mutants is Disney. In August, Business Insider reported that the company could be apprehensive about sending another X-Men movie to theaters after Dark Phoenix disappointed at the box office. Fans will have to wait and see if the plan changes once again.
