Condemnation of Arrest of Dele Farotimi

The Obidient Movement has expressed strong disapproval over the recent arrest of lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi.

Farotimi was taken into custody and placed in prison on Wednesday due to allegations of defamation. His detention reportedly followed a complaint filed with the Inspector General of the Police.

In a statement by Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator, the movement demanded the prompt and unconditional release of Farotimi.

They raised concerns about the potential misuse of authority and the suppression of free speech in Nigeria.

“This administration has caused significant suffering to the Nigerian populace, raising fuel prices dramatically from #165 to over #1,100, leading to soaring food prices and essential commodities with no apparent benefits,” the statement said.

“Many cannot afford to eat adequately, with civil servants facing extreme hardship and the general population experiencing severe hunger and poverty.”

“People are desperately trying to survive without knowing what the future holds.”

“The floating of the Naira has escalated its exchange rate to $1 for around 1,800 Naira, impacting prices across the board while neglecting to reinvigorate industries or support agriculture and economic growth.”

“Businesses are failing due to rising operational costs, and interest rates for loans have surged to 27.5%, leaving many wondering how they will cope. Insecurity is rampant, food scarcity is prevalent, and the healthcare system is in disarray.”

“Additionally, the massive hike in electricity tariffs, despite poor service delivery, has severely affected the economy and living standards.”

“Any proposed tax reforms only serve to further impoverish the population without any accompanying productive measures for economic growth.”

“Hunger is widespread, with the minimum wage failing to cover the cost of basic necessities. Many civil servants report their salaries barely stretching to a few days, leading them to resort to loans to meet their needs, while some families are opting against having more children due to the ongoing hardship.”

“Dele Farotimi is a prominent advocate for human rights and has bravely challenged injustices and defended the vulnerable. His arrest appears to be a deliberate effort to intimidate and silence dissenters.”

“We unequivocally denounce this abuse of power and call for law enforcement to respect Farotimi’s basic human rights, as outlined in the Nigerian Constitution.”

“The authorities must ensure his immediate release, safeguarding his rights during this process.”

“If he is not released without delay, we will exercise our rights to engage in protests nationwide against this gross overreach of power and the neglect of the populace.”

“We also urge the international community to recognize this troubling situation and support Dele Farotimi and others advocating for justice and human rights within Nigeria.”

“Finally, we are aware of ongoing targeting of individuals, particularly Peter Obi, for speaking out against the government, and we stand ready to resist any cruelty and blatant power abuses directed at him.”
