Peter Obi Sets the Record Straight on Coalition Support

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, has offered clarification regarding his earlier comments on coalition-building.

He expressed his openness to forming a coalition aimed at inspiring hope among Nigerians as the country approaches the 2027 elections.

This statement was shared on his official X account on Tuesday.

Previously, Obi had turned down proposals from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other opposition figures to unite forces for the upcoming elections.

He highlighted that his support for any coalition would only come if it transcends merely a bid for power.

Obi made these remarks during a national conference focused on reinforcing democracy in Nigeria, titled “Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy: Pathway to Good Governance and Political Integrity,” which took place on Monday in Abuja.

However, he later clarified that his previous interview was misinterpreted.

He stated, “I have noticed that my sincere interview the day before was misquoted by several media sources, creating an incorrect narrative about my views. To clarify, I am not against coalition efforts. In fact, I support them, but not for mere power acquisition; my goal is to elevate Nigeria to a position of greatness.”

“I will not endorse any coalition that does not center on the well-being and advancement of ordinary Nigerians.”

“Discussions about governance must focus on the implications for everyday Nigerians and address crucial issues such as access to quality healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation.”

“Historically, coalitions in our nation have often formed for the sake of power, lacking genuine purpose, which has exacerbated the struggles faced by citizens. This is what I strongly oppose.”

“Leadership should prioritize service over self-serving interests. I continue to believe that a New Nigeria is achievable.”

“However, this requires a fundamental shift in how we view power—it should be approached as a tool for responsible change that benefits future generations.”
