Police Arrests 18 Over Violent Protest In Benue

Authorities in Benue State have arrested 18 individuals in connection with a tumultuous protest that took place in Sankera, Ukum Local Government Area. The demonstration was in response to the recent attacks by armed bandits in the region.

The protesters made an attempt to storm the Ukum Police Division headquarters but were thwarted by the stationed officers. The incident was a result of an attack on Ayati community in Borikyo Council Ward by suspected armed bandits, leading to casualties and injuries.

The enraged youths marched through Sankera, carrying the deceased bodies to the Local Government Caretaker Chairman’s residence, blocking roads, setting fires, and vandalizing government and private properties including the INEC office, Local Government Secretariat, and personal belongings of government officials.

In response to the unrest, the state government imposed a 24-hour curfew in the area to prevent further violence. The State Police Command dispatched teams to address the situation and prevent more attacks.

The Police Public Relations Officer released a statement acknowledging the ongoing security challenges in the region, particularly following the demise of a prominent figure and the heightened presence of security forces in Ukum to combat banditry.

The Commissioner of Police has intervened in the situation with tactical teams and security heads to maintain order and security. So far, 18 suspects have been apprehended, and investigations are underway to address the situation.
