Ajibola Bashiru, National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has accused Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, of using the recent tragedy in Ibadan as a political tool.
Recall that a distressing incident occurred at Islamic High School, Bashorun, in Ibadan on Wednesday during an event organized by Naomi Shikemi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife.
The Oyo State Police Command reported on Thursday that 35 individuals had lost their lives, with six more in critical condition.
However, new information on Friday suggested that the number of fatalities had risen to 40, with many others still receiving medical care.
In response to the deaths, Obi remarked that this tragedy reflects a deeper systemic failure within Nigeria, highlighting how children are put at risk due to inequalities while scrambling for Christmas gifts.
In reaction to Obi’s comments, Bashiru criticized him on X, stating: “@PeterObi is consistently inconsistent. I would have been disappointed if he did not try to play politics with the tragic incident.”
