Organizers of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement have declared a 3-day mourning period to honor those who have lost their lives during the ongoing protests across Nigeria.
Following a meeting held on August 6, the organizing committee released a statement signed by Hassan Soweto, Ayoyinka Oni, and Oloye Adeniji, announcing the mourning period from August 7 to August 9, 2024. The three days of mourning will start with a moment of reflection and conclude with a public symposium and candlelight procession.
The committee has called on all Nigerians, especially the youth supporting the fight against hunger and hardship, to observe the mourning period. They are encouraged to wear black, share movement graphics on social media, and engage in acts of solidarity with the fallen heroes.
Concerns over the government’s failure to protect peaceful protesters have been raised, with reports of police allowing attacks on demonstrators. The organizing committee condemned these actions and demanded accountability from the authorities.
The recent incidents of violence against protesters have prompted the committee to reconsider their strategy for the protests and demand justice for those who have been harmed or killed.
The committee also highlighted the need for the release of arrested protesters and called for an investigation into the violence and killings that have occurred during the protests.
In a show of unity, the committee emphasized the importance of peaceful demonstrations and the right to continue expressing grievances against bad governance in the country.
