Deadpool 3 has faced a lot of rumors over the past few months, including the idea that two versions of the character will be introduced in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Marvel has yet to confirm anything about the third installment, though Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds recently revealed that the project is officially underway. Here’s everything we know about the “kinda crazy” Deadpool 3.
Reynolds shares ‘Deadpool 3’ update
The introduction of Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is admittedly a tricky one. Unlike some characters, Deadpool comes to the scene with an R-rating and a penchant for breaking the fourth wall – two things no other Marvel superhero does.
With the franchise making over a billion dollars in its first two movies, it would be unwise to get rid of the things that make Deadpool so great. But it also makes it difficult to introduce the character without getting too crazy.
Marvel has been keeping Deadpool’s future MCU cameos under wraps, but Reynolds recently offered a hint about what’s to come. According to We Got This Covered, the actor revealed that pre-production is underway on Deadpool 3, which he described as being “kinda crazy.”
“Yeah we’re working on it right now with the whole team. We’re over at Marvel [Studios] now, which is like the big leagues all of a sudden. It’s kinda crazy. So yeah, we’re working on it,” he stated.
It should be noted that production has not started for Deadpool 3 and it sounds like they are in the early stages of developing a script. It is also possible that Deadpool appears in a different MCU film before his third act, which would serve as a way to introduce him.
How will Disney handle Deadpool’s absence?
One of the many questions surrounding Deadpool’s introduction relates to what the character was doing during the first three phases of the MCU.
One way to tackle this problem is by setting the first two Deadpool movies after the events in Avengers: Endgame. The movies never really establish a time-frame or comment on global events, so Marvel could take this approach to explain what Deadpool has been doing all these years.
If Marvels uses this tactic, then Wade Wilson was just an ordinary mercenary when the Avengers were battling Thanos (Josh Brolin) over the fate of the universe.
The studio has retconned storylines in the past to fit into the MCU, so it would not be that big of a stretch if they did it again. It would also enable the franchise to keep moving forward without trying to explain away too many things.
What about the fourth wall?
If Deadpool continues to break the fourth wall, Disney could use it as a means to hilariously update fans on the whole merger. This would be a fun way to introduce the X-Men into the MCU without having to fit everything together.
And who wouldn’t like to see Deadpool offering his opinion on Disney’s buyout of Fox?
Depending on how Marvel deals with Deadpool’s first two films, they could also have him watching some of the old movies to get up to speed. This would be a hilarious way for Marvel to take a few jabs at the critics, especially if they have Deadpool breaking the fourth wall.
Whatever happens, it will be interesting to see how Marvel handles Deadpool’s introduction. Hopefully, the character retains most of the traits that audiences have grown to love.
Will Deadpool appear in a crossover?
While fans wait for more news about Deadpool 3, there has been a lot of talk about the character teaming up with another MCU superhero. Doctor Strange 2 is a clear frontrunner for a Deadpool cameo, though things could get messy in the multiverse.
That said, the multiverse could be a great way to introduce Deadpool and the rest of the X-Men, assuming they come from a different timeline.
There are, of course, other superheroes that might be teaming up with Deadpool in the near future. This includes Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who is getting ready for his third film in the MCU, and Thor (Chris Hemsworth), who is getting another film of his own with Thor: Love and Thunder.
The next movie in Marvel’s lineup, meanwhile, is Black Widow, which is set to open in theaters in May (and will likely not feature a Deadpool cameo).
