Seeing Progress in the Collaboration with Suo

I still choose to see progress (via Primetweets)

The partnership with Suo, Nigeria’s pioneering female sports commentator, as an ambassador for the bookmaker 1xBet signifies a new chapter highlighting the potential achievements of women when afforded equal opportunities. Suo’s influence transcends sports, and 1xBet recognizes her as a beacon for a fresh generation of Nigerian women.

Suo’s Influence on Nigerian Society and Women’s Football Perspective

Suo commands respect within the Urhobo community, which boasts a population exceeding 1.2 million, cementing her status as one of its most prominent figures. Our dialogue delved into her standing and the status of women’s football.

How does your community perceive your profession as the first female commentator in Nigeria and the first female Urhobo chieftain in over a century?

– As the initial female pidgin sports commentator in Nigeria and the first woman from Urhobo parentage in 100 years to inherit a chieftaincy title, my community’s response to my career as a sports journalist evokes a mix of sentiments. Despite some considering me too daring or unconventional, I’ve received overwhelming support from both my family and community.

Particularly, my monarch, HRM Emmanuel Bethel Delekpe, Owhorhu 1, views my work as a vital contribution shining a positive spotlight on our Udu Kingdom and serving as a role model for our youth, especially women. This endorsement, along with that of my council of elders, High Chiefs, and King, granted me permission to assume my father’s title.

Known as the “Okugbe 2” of Udu Kingdom, meaning Peacemaker – Ambassador of Peace, I am entrusted by my people to utilize my skills as a sports commentator to promote unity, despite not mirroring my father’s approach. Leveraging sports as a unifying tool in contemporary times is a privilege and a blessing that I deeply appreciate.

What is your perspective on contemporary women’s football?

– While modern women’s football has made significant strides in popularity, skill development, and visibility, there remains substantial room for growth, necessitating genuine acknowledgment and investment to enhance the value women bring to the sport.

How do you assess the FIFA Women’s World Cup?

– The FIFA Women’s World Cup stands as a premier global tournament that highlights the progression of women’s football. The increased participation, heightened technical and tactical standards, and expanding fan base portray the game’s evolution. Noteworthy players such as Marta, Alex Morgan, Sam Kerr, and our own Asisat Oshoala are inspiring a new generation, contributing to the sport’s growing appeal.

Rising television viewership, enhanced prize money, amplified investment, and elevated recognition for players and teams collectively signify a promising trajectory for women’s football.

What are the prospects for women’s football in Nigeria?

– Despite facing challenges such as limited resources, cultural barriers, and inadequate infrastructure, women’s football in Nigeria possesses the potential for advancement. Players like Chiamaka Nnadozie and Rasheedat Ajibade, who transcended the NWFL to garner international acclaim, exemplify this potential. Embracing continued support and investment can nurture the growth of women’s football, inspiring increased participation and viewership.

In club football and international competitions, Suo’s allegiance extends beyond neutrality to openly favoring specific teams.

Do you exhibit bias when commenting on sporting events, or do you strive for impartiality?

– It’s challenging, especially as a devoted supporter (Go Chelsea! Up Warri Wolves!! Up Delta Queens!!!). Yet, I adhere to my professional training, endeavoring to maintain objectivity and deliver impartial commentary during sporting events.

While I revel in acknowledging outstanding performances and achievements, my objective remains to enrich viewers’ experience with insightful and engaging commentary, devoid of personal bias or favoritism.

Which team did you support during the Euro tournament?

– Spain. I recommended betting on them even before the championship commenced. Spain possesses a rich football heritage and a skilled team blending seasoned players with emerging talents, ensuring a strategic balance across defense, midfield, and attack.

Although the Euro 2024 witnessed formidable competition from teams like France, the Netherlands, England, and Turkey, Spain’s synchronization under Luis de la Fuente’s adept leadership rendered them a formidable contender.

Why are women less associated with betting, and can this perception evolve?

There exists a stereotype suggesting that women exhibit lesser interest in sports betting and sports activities compared to men. Suo challenges this stereotype and envisions a transformative role in altering this narrative.

Why do you believe men display more enthusiasm towards sports and betting?

– Historically, varying cultural, social, and biological factors have predisposed men to active involvement in sports and betting, given the traditional emphasis on male participation in sports and competitiveness.

Nevertheless, these factors do not exclusively dictate men’s fervor for sports and betting. With increasing exposure and accessibility to sports and betting platforms, women’s engagement and interest in these domains are on the rise, signaling a potential shift.

Can this paradigm be reshaped?

– Representation plays a pivotal role in driving change. Extending the presence of women in Brand Ambassador roles akin to mine can significantly contribute to reshaping gender roles and debunking misconceptions and stereotypes.

Advocating for women’s sports and betting initiatives, promoting responsible betting practices through education and awareness, and adopting inclusive marketing and promotional strategies can collectively foster a more diverse and inclusive sports and betting landscape, offering an engaging platform accessible to all enthusiasts!
