Senate Ousts CCT Chairman Danladi Umar from His Position

Senate Removes CCT Chairman Danladi Umar From Office (via Primetweets)

The Nigerian Senate has officially dismissed Danladi Umar from his position as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

This decision was made following a vote that achieved the necessary two-thirds majority among Senators.

Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele initiated a motion for Umar’s removal, referencing “Section 157(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended.”

Bamidele explained that numerous petitions and serious corruption allegations against Umar led the 9th Senate to conduct investigative hearings through the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions.

Additionally, the motion highlighted Umar’s prolonged absence from work, exceeding a month, without any authorized leave or voluntary recusal.

Such issues, along with others, prompted President Bola Tinubu to nominate Mr. Abdullahi Usman Bello as Umar’s successor.

Following a discussion among Senators, Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio called for a vote, resulting in 74 Senators supporting the removal, while 10 opposed it.

The Senate formally ruled for Umar’s dismissal, and Akpabio instructed the Senate Clerk to inform the presidency per legal requirements.
