seven days after bail emefiele fails to meet n300m bail condition as he languishes in kuje prison

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele might spend a long time in Kuje Prison over his failure to meet his N300m bail condition.

Seven days after he was granted bail, Emefiele is yet to be released as he’s still languishing in Kuje Prison, in Abuja.

The ex-CBN chief has not been able to perfect the bail conditions imposed on him by High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.

Justice Hamza Muazu had on November 22 granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N300 million.

In a ruling, Justice Muazu had ordered that Emefiele must produce two sureties who must have landed properties in the Maitama District of the Federal Capital Territory.

Emefiele was at Kuje Prison on remand when the bail conditions were handed down to him.

The judge had ordered that Emefiele should remain in prison custody until he fully meets all the bail conditions.

However at the commencement of trial on Tuesday, Emefiele was brought to court in a van by fully armed security personnel of the Kuje Prison.

The court premises was heavily guarded by armed security agents.

Counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, told our correspondent that the former CBN chief has not perfected his bail conditions, hence, he remains in prison on remand.

Similarly, Emefiele’s lawyer, Mathew Burkaa, SAN, while admitting that his client is still at the prison, told DAILY POST that his team is making efforts to perfect the bail conditions.

He said that the knotty issue is getting two sureties with landed properties in the Maitama District of Abuja.

Immediately after Tuesday’s proceedings, Emefiele was taken back to the prison.
