Governor Dapo Abiodun
Ogun State authorities have firmly rejected any plans to introduce a Sharia Court within its jurisdiction.
This announcement was made by Governor Dapo Abiodun on January 28, 2025. The government emphasized that solely recognized courts in the state must operate under the legal statutes provided by Nigerian law, highlighting that a Sharia Court lacks the legal framework needed for establishment.
The statement responded to a recent public notice suggesting the initiation of a Sharia court in the state.
In the announcement, it was reiterated that “Only courts recognized by the Nigerian Constitution, such as Magistrates’ Courts, High Courts, Customary Courts, and others, are authorized to resolve disputes in Ogun State,” clarifying that Sharia law is not part of the state’s judicial system.
“The Ogun State Government has noted the circulation of a digital notice announcing the launch of a Shari’ah Court in Ogun State. No Sharia Court is authorised to operate within Ogun State,” the statement confirmed.
“Established courts operating according to the Constitution of Nigeria are the only ones that provide legal adjudication,” the statement further elaborated.
The government asserted that no legislation endorses a Sharia Court in Ogun State and reiterated the commitment to safeguarding the rights of individuals in practicing their chosen religions, within personal confines. However, it stressed that this freedom does not permit unauthorized institutions to be formed. Individuals or groups are not entitled to create a court system without legal authorization; those associated with the notice do not possess the necessary legal entitlement.
Authorities instructed those involved with this unauthorized court to halt all operations immediately and dismantle the unlawful entity and any related structures.
“The Ogun State Government also urges the public to ignore any documents or summons linked to the illegal Sharia Court and to report such incidents to the state promptly,” the announcement concluded.
“The Ogun State Government remains dedicated to enforcing the rule of law and maintaining respect for the state’s legal and judicial framework, thereby preventing any potential disruption of peace and order.”
