Reports indicate that the Finnish authorities have released two individuals who were arrested alongside Ekpa, a prominent Biafran activist.
Ekpa, taken into custody on November 21, 2024, is under suspicion for terror-related crimes, including encouraging violence and providing financial support for terrorism activities in Nigeria.
Following his arrest, the Päijät-Häme district court has enforced his detention, citing accusations of “disseminating terrorist propaganda via social media.”
Since November 2024, the five suspects have been held in custody. However, sources informed The Nation that two of Ekpa’s alleged accomplices have now been released by Finnish officials.
Currently, there is no information regarding the identities of those released or the circumstances behind their release.
While government representatives confirmed that Ekpa remains detained, they have refrained from sharing further details.
This situation unfolds as Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, revealed that the Nigerian government has officially sought Ekpa’s extradition.
Gen. Musa mentioned that the necessary extradition paperwork has already been presented to Finnish authorities.
“Legal proceedings will proceed as appropriate,” he stated.
“The Federal Government has submitted most of the required documents to the Finnish Government. I am confident that the correct procedures will be followed,” he continued.
Investigative reports indicate that the Finnish government is working closely with Nigerian authorities to tackle the violent activities associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in southern Nigeria.
