Speed Darlington Emerges from Detention: A Look at His Release (Photos)

His attorney, Stan Alieke, confirmed the news of his release on social media Tuesday evening.

Nigerian artist Darlington Achakpo, known as Speed Darlington, has been released from detention. His confinement was linked to allegations of defaming fellow artist, Burna Boy.

In a Tuesday evening announcement on social media, his lawyer, Stan Alieke, stated:

“I am pleased to inform everyone that our client, Mr. Darlington Achakpo, also known as Speed Darlington (Akpi), has been freed after two months of unlawful detention.”

He continued, emphasizing that the legal team will thoroughly examine all legal avenues to seek justice for Mr. Achakpo, claiming his basic human rights were violated by the Nigerian Police and that he faced unjust treatment.

Mr. Achakpo expressed his heartfelt thanks to those who supported him during this ordeal, with special appreciation directed to his legal colleagues, including Mr. Marshal Abubakar Esq, Barr Deji Adeyanju, Barr Hamza Nuh, and Barr David.

Speed Darlington had been in police custody since November 2024 after allegedly failing to comply with bail conditions.

He is under investigation based on a complaint from Burna Boy, who accused him of defamation for a video released last December, where he suggested that Burna Boy won a Grammy award after “bending down” for Diddy.
