Tom Holland’s Spider-Man currently boasts a romantic relationship with Zendaya’s Michelle Jones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Michelle Jones, or MJ for short, pays homage to the iconic Mary Jane via initials, yet boasts an identity all her own — one that’s a far cry from the damsel in distress witnessed in the Tobey Maguire-led franchise. However, if recent rumors surrounding possible characters pegged to join the MCU turn out to be credible, Peter Parker may be in for two more romances before bidding the franchise farewell. So, let’s break down the leaks.
1. Mary Jane Watson
Rumor has it that Mary Jane Watson may be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yes, the real Mary Jane, not an MJ offshoot, but the comic book character fans have come to know and love. Marvel Studious would be unlikely to bring Mary Jane Watson into the landscape without forging forward via a blooming romance with Parker.

If the studio simply wanted to add a new character, they would not choose one with such a well-known narrative history — and a character arc and historical legacy fraught with strict fan expectations. You don’t bring Mary Jane in unless you plan to follow the orthodox story. In other words, a love triangle will likely be on the way, and Tom Holland’s Spidey will likely fall for the beautiful Mary Jane, leaving Michelle Jones to explore the neighborhood solo, which could work to set up Jones for Spider-Woman.
While the connection between Spider-Woman and Michelle Jones remains purely speculative (based on narrative presumption and plausibility alone), Mary Jane Watson joining the MCU would provide a little credence to the idea, as what would happen to Jones? Would she just disappear from the franchise?

2. Gwen Stacy (who may join the MCU as Spider-Gwen)
Marvel insider Mikey Sutton recently reported that the MCU is planning to bring Spider-Gwen into the MCU. If you remember Emma Stone’s character from The Amazing Spider-Man series or Bryce Dallas Howard’s from the Sam Raimi films, you will remember that Gwen Stacy is one of Peter Parker’s other famous loves. According to Sutton:
…Disney has a mad crush on the character. She is incredibly popular, especially with young girls. In fact, her massive following crosses gender and age groups. Marvel Studios wants more than just Stacy to play a supporting role in their Spider-Man movies. They want to produce and release a Spider-Gwen movie, have it fully set in the MCU, teaming the character with various Young Avengers. No casting has begun for Stacy yet. Discussions for this project have just started.

If Spider-Gwen is set to team up with various other Avengers, she is bound to cross paths with Parker; thus, she could wind up in a romantic relationship with the character. Their dynamic would just boast an origin point that departs from the comics: two heroes find love based on their lives as super saviors, as opposed to one hero falling in love with another non-hero.
