Disney only recently inked a deal with Sony to keep Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), yet we might already know when the web-slinger will be making his triumphant return to the big screens. A source close to production claims that Marvel plans on bringing Spider-Man back to the MCU as early as 2021. Here’s everything we know about Spider-Man’s next appearance.
Spider-Man to play a big role in the MCU
Holland has already played Peter Parker in a few of Marvel’s biggest movies, including Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, but the studio still has big plans for the character in years to come.
According to We Got This Covered, Marvel reportedly plans on releasing Spider-Man 3 in 2021 (that date was set before the contract issues with Sony). Few details have been revealed about the project, but the studio clearly wants to move quickly now that it has a new deal with Sony.
Although we do not know much about Holland’s third solo project, an inside source claims that the character will be making another appearance in the MCU sometime in 2023.
On Twitter, a trusted source named Daniel RPK revealed that Holland will be reprising the role in Captain Marvel 2, which is reportedly set to open in theaters in 2023.
How are Spider-Man and Captain Marvel connected?
Apart from fighting alongside each other in Avengers: Endgame, Marvel made a clear connection between Spider-Man and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
In the post-credits scene, we learned that a Skrull had been impersonating Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury throughout the entire movie. The real Fury was working on a mysterious project in outer space with other Skrulls while Spider-Man was dealing with Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) on Earth.
We still do not know what Fury is planning, but the Skrulls were an integral part of Captain Marvel. The character’s sequel is expected to feature a secret invasion by the Skrulls, which would explain why Spider-Man might get involved.
That said, Marvel has not confirmed any of these reports, so fans should wait for official confirmation before getting too excited.
Tom Holland drunkenly saves the day
Prior to the new deal with Sony, there were a few months when Marvel fans lost all hope that Spider-Man was going to remain in the MCU.
This past summer, reports surfaced that Marvel’s talks with Sony had stalled and that the two companies could not agree on a contract extension for the character. Turns out, Holland played a big part in getting both sides to agree to a new deal.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Holland revealed that he had a drunk conversation with the head of Disney, Bob Iger, which helped convince the studio to re-open talks.
“I got his email and I sent him the email and he responded very quickly saying he’d want to jump on the phone and asked when I was free,” Holland explained. “So, two, three days go by and then my family and I went to the pub quiz in our local town. We’re doing a quiz and I’m three pints in, haven’t eaten much, and I get a phone call from an unknown number and I have a feeling. I’m like, ‘I think this is Bob Iger but I’m drunk.’”
Holland added that he practically “wept” over the phone with Iger because he hated the idea of Spider-Man leaving the MCU for good. A few months later, Disney and Sony reached an agreement to move forward with Spider-Man 3, which is set to open in theaters on July 16, 2021.
Holland reveals that he almost took on this profession
While Holland is now a successful actor in Hollywood, there was a time when his own mother wanted him to take up a more stable career. During the same interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Holland revealed that his mom wanted him to be a carpenter.
She even enrolled him in a school to get a degree in carpentry. Holland attended a few classes at the school but failed to graduate with his degree.
Instead, he decided to pursue his dream to be an actor. Considering how Spider-Man: Far From Home made $1 billion on the big screens, it is safe to say that Holland’s decision has paid off.
Marvel has not confirmed the reports surrounding Spider-Man’s future appearances in the MCU. The studio’s contract with Sony allows for one more solo film plus one cameo in a film.
The next movie in Marvel’s lineup is Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, which is set to open in theaters on May 1.
