With the Skywalker saga completed, Disney is looking for somewhere new to go with Star Wars. There is no shortage of TV shows coming out on Disney+. The Mandalorian featuring Baby Yoda is on track for a season 2 this fall.
In the meantime, there are plans for an Obi-Wan Kenobi series as well as a Cassian Andor series. Now, there is one more series in the works and a new movie featuring the Knights of the Old Republic. Let’s take a look at what we know about it so far.
The Knights of the Old Republic was originally a video game
The video game, often called KotOR, is a role-playing video game set in the Star Wars universe. It came out in 2003 through BioWare and LucasArts. It takes place almost 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire is formed.
The person playing the game is a Jedi and must venture to various planets in the galaxy to defeat Darth Malak, a Dark Lord of the Sith. The player must choose between three character classes—Scout, Soldier, or Scoundrel) at the beginning of the game.
Throughout the game, they make plot decisions that award them either Light Side or Dark Side points, which then determine which side of the Force the player aligns with.
The game received critical acclaim upon its release due to its unique characters, story, and sound. It was nominated for various awards and is considered by many to be one of the best video games ever made. It makes sense that Disney capitalizes on this by turning it into a movie and a television series.
What will the new ‘Star Wars’ movie and television series be about?
Disney is working on a Knights of the Old Republic show as well as a movie, according to Fandomwire.
The series and film will follow the storyline of the video game. It will be set 3,956 years before A New Hope when Darth Malek and Sith Lord Revan ruled. The Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary refers to Revan, confirming that he is indeed canon.
The dictionary describes precisely how the sith troopers form into legions, which are each named after an ancient Sith Lord. A notable legion is the 3rd: the Revan Legion.
The era is extensive with a lot to explore, so it makes sense that Disney would choose to head there after the completion of the Skywalker Saga.
Fans have been begging for the Old Republic of ‘Star Wars’ for years
“I really hope the next Star Wars movies that come out are Old Republic (dark age included) era,” wrote one excited fan on Reddit. The fan highlighted everything, “I want to see Bane, Revan, Marr, Malgus, Nihulus, Exar Kun!!! I wanna SEE THEM ALL!!!”
Some other fans hypothesize that this wish might be the truth.
“I’m gonna go out and say that this new trilogy in 2023 or whenever will be old Republic,” guessed one fan on Reddit. “One can only hope.”
Various fans on different websites often comment that they hope for a movie or television series based on the Old Republic. These viewers might get their wish.
“Honestly, I think the reason they are waiting years till the next movie is so that they can build a plan around SW cinematic universe,” surmised another Redditor. “Most of the material they need to draw on already exists in legends and in the old republic, so here is hoping.”
While the announcement did not come from Disney yet, sources believe it to be true. The next Star Wars movie and series will be based on the Knights of the Old Republic. All there is to do now is wait (and hope) that it is true.
