Starring in the biggest movie franchise of the past 40-odd years certainly has its rewards, but it has its drawbacks too. One of those is questions — the same questions popping up over and over and over and over and over again.
When the actors do press for their movies, they often sit in a room while different interviewers rotate in and out. Inevitably questions will be repeated. Then the actors have to endure the repetition on the talk show circuit.
Now that their journey with Star Wars is complete, there are definitely questions they don’t want to answer ever again.
Don’t ask, don’t tell
Variety assembled a compilation of the Star Wars cast defining those questions they’re looking forward to not hearing. Oscar Isaac, who plays Poe, sighed, thought for a second and said, “There’s just so many.”
Kelly Marie Tran, who plays Rose, had an answer relevant to a culture that has become hyper-sensitive to spoilers: “Every time someone asked me about what I can say and I can say nothing … it’ll be nice to talk about it out in the open. No more secrets.”
Isaac finally came up with his answer, which was similar to Tran’s: “The whole, like, spoiler hunt. That’s kind of an annoying one. It’s like a game where everyone knows you can’t say anything, but they still try to get these spoilers out of you.”
Daisy Ridley (Rey) got philosophical about her answer, saying, “One that’s hard is how has your life changed? How do you summarize six years of your life, you know?”
Anthony Daniels bears the unusual distinction of being the only actor to appear in all nine of the Skywalker saga films, usually playing C-3PO, although he’s also had the odd cameo in the flesh. He’s heard all the questions probably more than any other actor.
He said, “Please, let me never hear it again: ‘What is it like?’ Oh, for heaven’s sake. I don’t know!”
This happened with ‘Game of Thrones’ too
Of course, this situation doesn’t just happen to Star Wars actors. Last year was the year to bring an end to long-running franchises, with Game of Thrones and the Skywalker saga wrapping up lengthy runs. Variety put this same question to the GoT cast: What questions do you never want to hear again?
Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) felt the same way as Daniels, saying she never wants to hear, “How does it feel?” again. “I guess it’s understandable, (but) It’s obviously quite horrifying and sad,” she said. Her on-screen sister, Sophie Turner (Sansa) said her least favorite question was “What is your emotional arc,” because that was an obvious ploy to get spoilers out.
Being a Stark is particularly hard, and Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark) answered the question before the reporter finished it: “Are you the night king? Too bad he couldn’t have said at the time, “No, but I win the whole show.”
What will be the future questions of Star Wars?
Game of Thrones almost had a connection to Star Wars in that Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss were going to direct what was to be the next Star Wars movie after Rise of Skywalker. However, that ended up falling through after the duo signed a deal with Netflix and decided to concentrate on that instead. The next Star Wars movie has not been announced, but one is scheduled to come out in 2022.
For now, at least, Star Wars seems to be turning its attention to television, with The Mandalorian having been a great success for Disney+.
Season 2 is expected to arrive in late 2020, and it’s easy to guess that members of the cast are probably tired of fielding questions about the ubiquitous Baby Yoda. With any luck, we’ll find out more about him by the end of the year.
