‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ revealed the truth about Rey’s parents, or so we thought

Before we get to the spoiler, let’s review what we know so far about Rey’s parents. One of the most talked-about revelations from The Last Jedi was the fact that Rey is not a Skywalker nor a Kenobi.

“They were filthy junk traders,” Kylo Ren told a sobbing Rey. “Sold you off for drinking money. They’re dead in a pauper’s grave in the Jakku desert. You come from nothing. You’re nothing. But not to me.”

Viewers were shocked to hear that Rey’s parents were not from a Jedi bloodline. However, this revelation fits with the theme of the movie. Anyone can develop Jedi powers, not just those that are born into a family of Jedi.

This spoiler, straight from Disney, indicates that Kylo Ren was lying to Rey in ‘The Last Jedi’

Below you will see the latest trailer from the Star Wars‘ Twitter account. In the 15-second clip, viewers hear an ominous voiceover.

“It is time that she learns her story,” Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) ominously says while we see Rey look down at her hand in fear.

The trailer indicates that Palpatine could be her father or grandfather, as some fans feared. It also gives viewers the beloved “duel of the fates.” musical theme from the Prequel Trilogy.

“I will say there is more to the story [of Rey’s parentage] than you’ve seen,” J.J. Abrams told Good Morning America.

Although the trailer does not come right out and say that Rey is of the Palpatine bloodline, that is the implication. Watch it for yourself below.

How fans are reacting to the spoiler regarding Rey’s father

“After years of having Daisy Ridley and a lot of people saying ‘Rey doesn’t need to be Luke’s daughter to be powerful, she is powerful for herself’ finding that she is ‘powerful’ because her grandfather is like a slap,” wrote an angered Star Wars fan in a comment to the trailer on Twitter.

To summarize, most fans feel the same way about this implication. They are outraged that her father could be the evil Emporer.

“There is a lot hanging on this one,” wrote one fan on Twitter. “Fandom aside…hype aside… I hope this delivers true to the legacy in an honest and respectful way.”

Diehard fans take the trailer with a grain of salt and still hope that Disney will finish off the trilogy in a genuine way.

There is no way for viewers to know for sure if Palpatine is Rey’s father until the movie is released. Fans can head to the theaters on Dec. 20, 2019, to see Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker
