Suicide Squad Director David Ayer Says James Gunn is “Reinventing the Universe”
David Ayer may not be returning to the director’s chair for The Suicide Squad, but he has only good things to say about his successor, James Gunn. Back in 2016, Ayer helmed the first Suicide Squad movie, which introduced Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, among others. Ayer recently took to Twitter to clarify the relationship between the two movies. He also went out of his way to praise Gunn and share his excitement for the franchise.
It’s not a sequel it’s a reinvention and @JamesGunn is going to absolutely knock it out of the park. I’m cheering every step a way. https://t.co/MehKt7rvLO

Ayer went on to address the shared characters and performers between the two films. According to Ayer, Gunn is “reinventing the universe.”
Yes that is correct – some characters and elements will be used but @JamesGunn is reinventing the universe. Everybody recognizes the immense potential of the franchise. https://t.co/iiWSKPI17P

Robbie is one of four Suicide Squad cast members reprising their roles for the non-sequel. Viola Davis is also back as Amanda Waller, with Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag. Idris Elba is headlining the film in a currently undisclosed role. David Dastmalchian will portray Polka-Dot Man, alongside Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, and Steve Agee as the voice of King Shark. Additionally, Nathan Fillion, Peter Capaldi, Michael Rooker, Storm Reid, John Cena, and more will appear in the film.
The Suicide Squad will hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
