On Monday, March 13, 2023, the murder of Chief Alexander Diri, a 49-year-old man, by suspected Fulani herdsmen sparked protests in Bayelsa State. The victim’s body was discovered the next day near the Zarama Market junction on the East-West Road. He had been stabbed multiple times and beheaded. Alika Kemebi, a Facebook user, described the killing as “unacceptable, unthinkable, and unpardonable.” The incident led to gridlock and disrupted vehicular movement, leaving travelers stranded. The spokesperson of the State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident and stated that police detectives had visited the scene and the corpse was taken to the hospital for autopsy. The investigation is ongoing.
